The furry love of my life turned 7 today! And as any good puppy parent should, I made him a puppy doggy birthday cake! The recipe is completely made up, but is loosely based on the PEANUT BUTTER-BANANA DOG BISCUITS I make him.
It’s got all doggy safe ingredients (obviously!) and is sure to make your fur-baby drool! The main flavors are peanut butter and banana, with a Greek yogurt and peanut butter frosting.
A lot of cake recipes I found online are pumpkin or apple based, but Kujo gets both of those in his daily nutrition, so I chose to mix it up a bit.
Side Note: Kujo gets pure pumpkin and unsweetened applesauce daily in his food because it adds a healthy helping of fiber — about a spoonful of each, twice a day. As dogs get older, the extra fiber will help them use the puppy potty better. If you notice your dog isn’t “going” as normal, talk to your veterinarian about managing your dog’s fiber intake.
I made this cake in two layers, so the batter should be split between two 9×5 glass bread baking trays. I’m sure you could combine it all in one and use an 8×8 square baking dish, but you’ll have to watch the time as that will surely change.
PUPPY DOGGY BIRTHDAY CAKE: The Ingredients
This recipe is very easy and straightforward. In one bowl, mix your dry ingredients — flour, oats, and baking soda. In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients — egg, peanut butter, mashed banana, and milk. Then dump the wet into the dry and mix until combined.
This whole recipe can be made with a fork and spoon. There’s no need to beat or whip anything, which means less dishes!
I then placed parchment paper down into the pans, and spooned even amounts into each. Make sure to gently drop it on the counter a few times to level out the batter and remove any air bubbles. Into the oven they go at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, for 20 minutes.
PUPPY DOGGY BIRTHDAY CAKE: Frosting & Decorating The Cake
While the puppy doggy birthday cake layers are baking, you can prepare your frosting. Mix one small container of non-fat, plain Greek yogurt with peanut butter, and stir until well combined.
Once the layers are cooled, you can frost them. I placed one layer down, and frosted the top. Then placed the second layer over that. I then frosted the top and sides of the cake. It’s the perfect amount!
You can certainly be done at this point, but I chose to do a little extra. I dropped a scoop of peanut butter into a plastic bag, cut off the tip, and piped a “7” onto the cake, and some other designs. I cut a few banana coins and placed them in the frosted corners as well. Have fun with it!
The look on Kujo’s face was well worth it! There was enough for him, and his two puppy friends that came by to play for his birthday. You can also save some in the fridge for the next few days if you like. Definitely refrigerate the cake if you’ve made the Greek yogurt frosting.
Kujo devoured his slice in 5 seconds, but his tail wouldn’t stop wagging! Spend a few minutes on this cake, and your pups will surely thank you!

A peanut butter and banana puppy doggy birthday cake for your furry friends! Frosted with Greek yogurt and peanut butter, it's sure to make your pups drool!
|
- 1/2 cup AP flour
- 1/2 cup oats, quick
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 eggs
- 1 banana, ripe
- 1/4 cup creamy, natural peanut butter
- 1/4 cup milk I used low-sugar almond milk
- 1 5.3 oz container Greek Yogurt, plain, nonfat
- 1/4 cup creamy, natural peanut butter
- In small bowl, mix dry ingredients (flour, oats, baking soda). In separate small bowl, mash banana. Then add peanut butter, egg, and milk. Stir to combine.
- Add wet mix to dry mix, and stir with fork to combine.
- Place parchment paper in bottom of 2 9x5 glass bread baking dishes, and pour batter evenly into each. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, until middle of batter springs back slightly when you touch it (or toothpick comes out clean). Turn out onto wire rack to cool.
- Mix Greek yogurt and remaining peanut butter until combined. Once cakes are cooled, place one down, and frost. Place second layer on top, and frost top and sides. Decorate with peanut butter and banana if desired. Serve!
This recipe makes 2 9x5 baking pans. You can use batter in one 8x8 or 9x9 pan for one big layer, but you'll need to adjust cooking time. It would probably take closer to 30 minutes to fully bake through.
