Every year my mom, brother, sister, and I go apple picking near my hometown in Western New York. We’ve been doing it since as long as I can remember! And every year, Mom cans applesauce for all of us. But that night, after we’ve picked our apples and had our dinner, she whips up homemade apple crisp.
The soft, warm apples with crunchy, sweet streusel topping, paired with vanilla ice cream…yummy!
So this year, I asked for her recipe, and that’s what I’ve made for you today. It’s honestly super easy, and you can have it ready to eat in one hour! You can use apples specifically for baking if you like, but we’ve always used a combination of a few different apples. I find it gives the most complex flavor!
APPLE CRISP: Slicing the Apples
I’ve included a tutorial video on how to slice the apples properly. This will take a few minutes, but once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty quick and easy.
TIP: When peeling the apple, place it firmly on the cutting board and spin with one hand, while rotating your peeler around the outside of the apple.
Here’s the breakdown of the steps for slicing apples for your apple crisp properly:
Once all your apples are sliced, place them in a large glass greased baking dish, 9 x 13.
APPLE CRISP: Make the Streusel Topping
This is a combination of oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter. There’s no rhyme or reason to it, just measure it out and get it in one bowl. Mom sometimes even whips this up ahead of time, so we can just slice the apples, sprinkle the topping, and bake!
Put all the ingredients in one bowl, dump the melted butter over the top, and then stir until well combined. The key flavor in this recipe is the nutmeg. Not everyone uses it when cooking with apples, but the combination of cinnamon and nutmeg is the trick!
APPLE CRISP: Assembly
Crumble your finished streusel topping over the sliced apples in baking dish. Bake in preheated oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit, for about 30 minutes — until apples are bubbly and top has slightly browned.
I serve mine with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, and VOILA!
Delicious, homemade, simple apple crisp and the smell of Autumn fills your house.
